From the standpoint of American free-climbing standards, the Ophir Wall has survived, for the most part, as one of the last great bastions of ground-up traditional ethics. Located near Telluride, CO at about 10,000 feet elevation, this enormous exfoliating heap of rhyolite sits as an important regional and national crag. Many of her test-piece classics qualify as major alpine objectives and remain fortified by the important assets inherent to all adventure climbing: sparse protection, dubious route finding, difficult descents and objective hazards.
